For over a century, Vilakku Makers has been a proud torchbearer of South India’s timeless brass lamp-making tradition. Rooted in the historic artisan town of Nachiyarkoil, Tamil Nadu, we specialize in crafting handmade brass lamps that embody purity, devotion, and the enduring spirit of craftsmanship.
Our lamps are created at our own manufacturing unit, Udhaya Metals, located in the heart of Nachiyarkoil — a town world-renowned for its exquisite Kuthu Vilakkus and traditional brass artistry. Each lamp we produce is handcrafted by skilled artisans, following methods passed down through generations. From melting pure brass to the final polish, every stage of creation reflects precision, faith, and dedication to excellence.
At Vilakku Makers, we believe every lamp carries a story — a legacy of light that connects tradition with modern living. With a 100-year heritage, we continue to illuminate homes, temples, and hearts across the world, keeping the sacred glow of Nachiyarkoil’s craftsmanship alive for generations to come.

The Legacy of Nachiyarkoil Brass Lamps
Nestled near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, the temple town of Nachiyarkoil has been the heart of traditional brass lamp making for centuries. Renowned across South India, this small artisan village is home to generations of skilled craftspeople — especially from the Viswakarma community — who have dedicated their lives to perfecting the art of vilakku (lamp) making.
The origins of the Nachiyarkoil brass lamp date back to the time of the Chola dynasty (9th–13th century CE). The Cholas, great patrons of temple art and metalwork, encouraged artisans to create sacred objects for worship. Among these, the “Kuthu Vilakku”, a tall, ornate brass lamp with multiple tiers and intricate designs, became a symbol of divine light and prosperity.
Each lamp was — and still is — handcrafted using traditional lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. The signature features include graceful curves, detailed carvings, and the presence of the “Annam” (mythical swan) motif at the top, symbolizing purity and spiritual enlightenment.
Over time, Nachiyarkoil lamps became sought after for both religious and decorative purposes. They are not only used in temples and homes during auspicious occasions but also celebrated as a representation of South Indian artistry and cultural heritage. In recognition of its uniqueness and craftsmanship, the Nachiyarkoil Kuthu Vilakku received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Government of India — honoring its authenticity and the unmatched skill of its makers.
Today, Vilakku Makers proudly continues this 100-year-old legacy, preserving the age-old methods while bringing the timeless glow of Nachiyarkoil’s tradition into modern homes around the world.
